Man arrested in Ballito after faked hijacking to claim insurance payment

A man was arrested in Ballito outside Durban after he allegedly faked a hijacking so that he could claim insurance money, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

“The man reported to the police that his car had been hijacked at a shopping mall in Ballito. When they viewed camera footage, it was discovered that he drove his car from the mall,” said Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

The man admitted faking the hijacking when he was questioned by the police on Tuesday, he said.

“He told the police that he lied because he faced financial problems,” said Mdunge.

The man had already submitted the insurance claim when he was arrested. The value of the car was R180 000.
