Spilltech actively working on the cleanup along the affected beaches in Matzikama Munisipaliteit
The Municipality issued an information statement late yesterday evening to inform the public about the spill and to confirm that Spilltech teams are actively working on the cleanup along the affected beaches. The public has been advised to avoid the beaches at Strandfontein and Doringbaai. Additionally, Matzikama Law Enforcement has closed the beaches at Doringbaai, Strandfontein, and Papendorp until further notice.
Following an assessment of the affected areas, the following locations have been identified as containing oil residue:
• MSR (Tormin Mine): Ramp 4, Ramp 3, and Ramp 7
• Papendorp
• Strandfontein North (patchy contamination)
• Strandfontein South
• Kommetjie
•
The area from the CapeNature end of Doringbaai has been surveyed and is currently clear.
Spilltech teams have been on-site since yesterday and are continuing cleanup efforts with increased manpower today.
The IMS section head for Ultra Galaxy has been informed, and further response strategies will be discussed in an upcoming meeting. As a precautionary measure, booms are already being deployed.
