JMPD concerned by reckless driving behaviour exhibited by some breakdown vehicle operators
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has noted with increasing concern the reckless driving behaviour exhibited by some breakdown vehicle operators, particularly when responding to accident scenes. These actions include but are not limited to driving on traffic islands, encroaching on sidewalks, and driving facing oncoming traffic.
While the JMPD understands the urgency to reach accident scenes, breakdown vehicles are not classified as emergency vehicles, and therefore, these dangerous practices will not be tolerated. Such actions endanger not only the lives of other motorists and pedestrians but also the lives of the breakdown vehicle operators themselves.
The JMPD is committed to ensuring the safety of all road users in Johannesburg. Lawlessness on our roads will not be tolerated by any driver. Breakdown vehicle operators, like all other drivers, are expected to adhere to the rules of the road. Those caught flouting traffic laws, such as driving recklessly and negligently, will be arrested and will face the full might of the law.
“The safety of our residents is paramount,” said JMPD Chief of Police, Chief Patrick Jaca. “We understand the need for breakdown services, but that does not give anyone the right to disregard the law and put lives at risk. Reckless driving will not be tolerated, and we will take firm action against those who endanger others through their actions.”
The JMPD urges all motorists, including private vehicle drivers, public transport drivers, and breakdown vehicle operators, to drive responsibly and respect the rules of the road. We encourage members of the public to report any instances of reckless driving by breakdown vehicle operators to the JMPD.
