Train incident in Swakop under investigation

A TRAIN transporting modified fuel an equipment containers from Walvis Bay sustained damage when the cross bracing of a railway bridge over the Swakop River caused impact to the containers and accompanying tankers.

TransNamib confirmed this to The Atlantic Gazette on Tuesday, stating that the incident occurred on Sunday-night near Swakopmund.

“We are relieved that no harm came to our personnel, the public, or the environment. Safety remains our highest priority, and a full investigation is already underway to identify the root cause of this incident and to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” Abigail Raubenheimer, Manager of Corporate Communications at TransNamib, further expressing relief that there were no derailments, or hazardous spillages.

Structural engineers are currently on-site conducting assessments. Initial evaluations suggest that the damage to railway infrastructure is minor.

“We are committed to maintaining the highest safety and operational standards,” Raubenheimer assured, adding that corrective measures would be implemented based on the investigation’s findings.
