Lithium battery fire at premises in Wapadrand, Pretoria East

Just after 14:00 the Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit received a call for an unconfirmed structural fire in Wapadrand, Pretoria East. Our vehicle set out to investigate and found a property where there was an earlier fire in the garage. a Lithium battery reignited due to a thermal runaway sometime after Firefighters extinguished the fire. Our members managed to extinguish the surrounding materials until City of Tshwane Firefighters could remove the unstable battery to a safe area.

This reignition shows once again the dangers and unpredictability of Lithium Ion batteries and we urge all users with solar systems to take the necessary safety precautions.

Thank you to the City of Tshwane Firefighters for their professional actions on the scene.

Prevention is the best treatment!
