Minister Mackenzie brings world-renowned Madiba sculptures to Mitchells Plain

On Thursday, 19 September 2024, Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, facilitated the donation of two Marco Olivier sculptures – depicting the face of Nelson Mandela – to RLabs House in Mitchells Plain. The sculptures represent hope and inspiration for local communities and the young people who visit RLabs on a daily basis.

The donation comes after Minister Mackenzie met Marco Olivier on Sunday. He took the artist to Mitchells Plain on Monday morning, where Olivier was inspired to contribute to help change communities through his art.

RLabs House, which stands as a beacon of creativity and hope in the heart of Mitchells Plain, is currently celebrating its second anniversary with an exhibition called, “Where Art & Hope Meet,” to spotlight new and emerging artists from across Cape Town. Their mission is to nurture and uplift artistic talent in an often marginalised and overlooked community.

World-renowned sculptor, Marco Olivier, said, “I was inspired to donate these two pieces when I saw how this facility is making a difference to young people that might not have many opportunities. I want to give hope that tomorrow will be better than today.”

RLabs Founder, Marlon Parker, said, “A young child can now come into our space and see something that resonates with them – the incredible legacy of Nelson Mandela. Thank you planting a seed that will stir the hearts and dreams of many young people that will come through the building.”

Minister Mackenzie said, “Art changes communities and inspires. I bring people here to inspire them, to see hope for the future in our communities. Thank you to Marco Olivier for responding with this donation. Now the world will see that Mandela is smiling on all of us here in Mitchells Plain. Please come and visit and take a picture with this beautiful piece of art!”
