More than R 14 million worth of illicit goods intercepted at the border post

POLOKWANE – Members of the South African Police Service and other officials deployed at Groblersbrug Border Post, on Tuesday night, 11 February 2020 intercepted two trucks at about 21h50 and arrested three suspects. This is after they were found transporting illicit creams and cigarettes worth 14, 5 million rands.

The two trucks approached the border post from Botswana and as a routine after crossing into South Africa, the drivers were directed towards the searching bay. The load bins were then searched and the following were found packaged in boxes:

• 521 x boxes containing various skin lightening creams (Betasol, Diproson, Epiderm, Movate, Lemonvate and Extra Clear), valued at R13 518 960.00

• 30 x Cartoons of Pacific Blue cigarettes valued at R4 473.19

• 2 x Scania Trucks with a combined value of more than 1.5 million Rands.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has appreciated the work done by these members and that their vigilance has clearly ensured that these illicit goods did not find their way into the South African markets.

Investigations into the origin of these goods are still unfolding.

The suspects, aged between 39 and 47, are expected to appear in Phalala magistrate court soon.
