Renault Kadjar Crossover on Expansion Trail

Since launching in April 2016, the RENAULT KADJAR CROSSOVER has been favoured with rave reviews delivered by South Africa’s media and motoring public alike. Versatile in the extreme, the Kadjar crossover combines the best of three worlds – SUV, hatch and sportswagon – with owners attesting to its delivery of the best overall driving package inside and out.

Now just three months on, for extra versatility and convenience, the Renault Kadjar is expanding on its Dynamique 4×2 model range to include Efficient Dual Clutch(EDC) auto transmissions as well as 1.5 dCiturbo diesel engine model options.

NEW to the Renault Kadjar Dynamique 4×2 line-up are the:

  • 1.5 (81kW) Turbo dCi 6-speed Manual
  • 1.5 (81kW) Turbo dCi EDC 6-speed Auto
  • 1.2 (96kW) Turbo petrol EDC 7-speed Auto (already available in manual)

EFFICIENT DUAL CLUTCH (EDC) – Driving Customers’ Expectations

Auto gearbox aficionados familiar with the convenience and refinement of Renault’s EDC gearbox appreciate the system’s delivery of the driving comfort of an automatic in tandem with the responsiveness and versatility of a manual gearbox.

The result is an excellent, fuel-efficient drive (reductions of up to 17% in fuel consumption and up to 30g/km in CO² emissions) together with seamless, smooth gear changes. Substantial reductions in engine noise have also improved levels of acoustic comfort.

Reliable and robust, the Renault-developed EDC gearbox has a host of advantages. It dispenses with the need for a clutch pedal, while gearshift control is of the ‘P-R-N-D’ type plus an ‘up/down’ shift mode. The ideal gear is selected by an electronic control unit and gearshifts are both automatic and comfortable.

To optimize efficiency and minimize fuel consumption, Renault has chosen a twin-plate dry clutch system for its EDC transmission to pair with the 1.5 dCi turbo diesel engine powering the new Kadjar 6-speed auto. The first of the two clutches looks after the odd-number gears (1st, 3rd and 5th), while the second covers the even-number gears (2nd, 4th and 6th), as well as reverse.

The gears are carried by four shafts: two concentric primary shafts (each of which is connected to a clutch) and two secondary shafts. Gears are matched by means of synchronizers, as is the case with a manual gearbox. These synchronizers, like the clutches, are operated by electric actuators which in turn are controlled by a control unit.

RENAULT 1.5 dCi TURBO ENGINE – A Global Powerhouse

The 1.5 dCi 81kW turbo diesel is the Renault engine most sold worldwide. It is currently available in the Renault Duster launched here in September 2013 and was recently added to the Renault Captur range.

Developed using technology derived directly from decades-long Renault Formula 1 expertise and substantiated to reduce fuel consumption and CO² emissions by an incredible 35%, the 1.5 dCi 81kW turbo diesel engine isthe power behind both the new Renault Kadjar Dynamique 4×2 6-speed manual andDynamique 4x2EDC 6-speed auto models.

The new 1.2 (96kW) Turbo petrol Kadjar Dynamique 4 x 2 (previously only available in manual), is paired with Renault’s EDC 7-speed Auto transmission which features an oil-bathed concentric multi-disc dual clutch system (wet clutch). This is a proven combination that delivers optimum ride comfort with seamless gear changes, reduced fuel consumption and CO² emissions.

The 1.5 dCi turbo diesel power plant delivers maximum power output of 81Kw with peak torque rating of 260Nm on the manual reached at 1 750 r/min. The EDC auto derivative delivers maximum torque at 250Nm also at 1 750 r/min.

Fuel and eco-friendly, both fuel consumption (4.6 litres/100km in combined cycle NEDC) and CO² emissions (120 g/km) are low. A second-generation Direct Common Rail + multi-injection fuel system, it ensures that only the minimum amount of fuel is injected into the cylinders for optimized fuel consumption.

In Europe, the 1.5 dCi is fitted on Renault C-segment models including Mégane, Scénic and Grand Scénic) as well D-segment models (the Laguna hatch, station wagon and coupé as well as the Latitude sedan).

PROVEN F1 TECHNO-TRANSFER

The 1.5 dCi underscores Renault engineers’ excellence when it comes to engine downsizing and coupled with a manual 6-speed gearbox, this power plant affords unparalleled driving pleasure thanks to its extreme responsiveness in all conditions (low end torque). Its turbo architecture has a specific and innovative design which simplifies air admission for a higher output.

Clearly the 1.5 dCi (diesel Common-rail injection) has derived huge benefit from Renault’s wealth of F1 experience. The low inertia variable geometry turbo and Common-rail 1 600 bar coupled with piezoelectric injectors and multi-injection (up to 5 injections per cycle) deliver a high level of power (maximum output of 81kW and torque 250Nm (EDC auto) and 260Nm (manual). As already mentioned, reduced noise levels are an additional plus.

The 1.5 dCi turbo diesel engine is a low capacity engine that delivers amazing power and torque generating proven and unparalleled flexibility. Attributes which owners of the new Renault Kadjar Dynamique 4×2 6-speed manual and EDC 6-speed auto models will soon be able to attest to.
